2. Retractable Injection Quills
Among all the types of injection quills, the retractable design is the preferred choice for high-pressure and offshore applications. A retractable injection quill incorporates a packing gland and locking mechanism that allows the quill to be withdrawn from the pipeline under live process conditions — without isolating or depressurising the line. The quill slides out through the packing assembly, and an integral check valve prevents process fluid from escaping during the retraction procedure.
Best suited for: High-pressure oil and gas pipelines, offshore platforms, and any application where unplanned shutdowns for instrument maintenance are not acceptable.
Key advantage: Allows inspection, cleaning, and replacement of the quill tip during full operation — dramatically reducing maintenance downtime.

3. Injection Quills with Spray Nozzle or Dispersion Tip
Standard open-ended quills deliver chemical in a single stream, which relies on pipeline turbulence to achieve dispersion. In larger-diameter pipelines or low-velocity services, this can result in poor mixing and inconsistent chemical distribution across the pipe cross-section. Spray nozzle quills are among the most effective types of injection quills for solving this specific problem.
This specific type of injection quill is fitted with a spray nozzle or atomising dispersion tip that breaks the chemical stream into fine droplets, significantly increasing the surface area of contact with the process fluid and accelerating uniform dispersion — even in large-bore or low-flow conditions.
Best suited for: Large diameter pipelines, gas injection systems, and applications where precise, uniform chemical distribution is critical to process performance.
4. Injection Quills with Integral Check Valve
Among the types of injection quills with built-in safety features, the check valve design is the most widely specified in oil and gas applications. An injection quill with an integral check valve incorporates a spring-loaded non-return valve at the quill tip. This prevents reverse flow of process fluid back into the chemical injection line when the dosing pump is off or during pressure surges — protecting the chemical injection pump and avoiding cross-contamination between the process fluid and the chemical supply.
