Basket Strainer RFQ Checklist for Projects in Saudi Arabia

A useful basket strainer enquiry describes what the unit must remove, how much fluid will pass through it and how the plant will maintain it. Line size alone does not provide enough information to compare quotations. For a project in Saudi Arabia, put the process duty, mechanical requirements and document schedule into one RFQ so each supplier quotes against the same basis.

Start with the operating duty

Identify the equipment being protected and the consequences of interruption. A pump suction line, cooling water circuit and chemical transfer line can have different pressure drop limits and maintenance requirements. State whether the strainer is required for commissioning debris, routine operation or both.

• Project, equipment tag and line number
• Fluid name and composition, including any hazardous constituents
• Minimum, normal and maximum flow, with units
• Density and viscosity at the operating temperature
• Operating and design pressure and temperature, identified separately
• Expected debris, particle size and approximate loading if known

If a value is provisional, label it as provisional and identify who will confirm it. This helps prevent an assumption in the quotation becoming an unintended design requirement.

Specify the required retention and pressure drop

State the particle size that downstream equipment must be protected against. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed basket opening and the basis for the clean pressure drop. A finer opening should not be selected simply because it sounds more protective: flow resistance and the expected cleaning interval also need review.

Provide the allowable clean pressure drop at the stated operating cases. Keep this separate from the differential pressure used to trigger cleaning. Any cleaning threshold must come from the selected equipment and operating procedure, rather than a universal value copied from another installation.

Decide whether flow can stop for maintenance

A simplex arrangement is intended for a line that can be isolated for cleaning. A duplex arrangement provides an alternative chamber while the other is taken out of service. The project team still needs to define safe changeover, isolation and maintenance procedures.

Tell the supplier how often the plant expects to inspect the basket and whether a process interruption is acceptable. Ask for a drawing showing cover access, basket withdrawal space, vents, drains and the proposed differential pressure connections. Check those dimensions against the actual installation space.

Define the supply boundary

List the body, basket, seal and connection requirements separately. Identify the flange standard, facing and pressure class, plus any coating or corrosion allowance required by the project specification. State whether mating flanges, gaskets, fasteners, spare baskets, instruments and valves belong in the quotation.

For a Saudi project, also identify the required document language, delivery destination and applicable client specifications. Request confirmation of any qualification or approval requirement. Do not assume that the general product offering of a supplier establishes approval for a particular client or project.

Compare the technical exceptions before the price

Ask each bidder to return a compliance statement listing deviations, exclusions and outstanding inputs. Compare the quoted materials, basket opening, pressure drop basis, maintainability and document scope before comparing the commercial total. A quotation with missing accessories or unpriced inspections can be difficult to compare with a complete offer.
